Marvel has done it again! Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is yet another achievement from the
king of comics. Even though the general consensus (so far) is that it’s not as
good as the first film, it has still pleased plenty of audiences.
Marvel has a rather iffy reputation
when it comes to its sequels. The Captain
America sequels were very impressive and they’re considered to be superior
to the original. However, the Iron Man and
Thor sequels have been, well, less
than stellar. So it is with great pleasure to announce that Guardians of the Galaxy has received a
proper sequel.
In
this film, each band of characters has their own storyline. Instead of watching
all of our characters go through one single adventure together as a group,
they’re separated, each one going through a different story, all culminating in
a very pleasing conclusion. This aspect gives the story a pretty wide scope,
with our characters placed in different environments, using their abilities to overcome
their obstacles. However, if there is one weakness in the film, it’s that the
transitions from one storyline to the next don’t work quite well. I’m not sure
if it’s a script or editing problem (or both), but many of the transitions don’t
feel very natural.
The dialogue is, well, adequate. It’s a typical comic
book film, so don’t expect anything too spectacular. Some of the lines do feel
quite forced and fall flat, but only at a minimum. For the most part, the jokes
work quite well, and I don’t think any of the dialogue was insulting. The
dialogue, when dealing with any specific topic, is kept at a minimum, which is
good. In the theater I went to, me and many other members of the audience were
heartily laughing at many of the jokes. When many members of an audience share
an experience, you know the movie is doing a great job.
I also want to add that I really, really like this
world. All the planets, all the settings, the ships, the technology, the
aliens, the characters. This is perhaps the most intricate and fascinating
universe that Marvel has ever created. After watching the film I just wanted to
sit down and have a talk with some of the characters of the film (my favorite
character is Rocket). Without giving away any spoilers, there is an end credits
scene that hints at a third film. I’m very, very interested to see what they
boil up for the next sequel, and hope that it’s just as good as this one.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is highly
recommended. It’s easily one of my favorite films thus far this year. Marvel’s
last films have all been consistently good. With this and Doctor Strange, it’s nice to see some of Marvel’s lesser known
properties get such a serviceable treatment in the big screen (could we get
another Howard the Duck movie?). These
stories are just as compelling as the more popular superheroes. Let’s hope that
Spiderman: Homecoming is just as good.
